The Netflix hit showSweet Toothfeatures a young boy named Gus, an animal-human hybrid kid with deer antlers and ears whose existence is both a mystery and a miracle. Within the world ofSweet Tooth, the hybrid children were born at the same time when a deadly and highly infectious illness came about, referred to as the Sick. In the first season, we discover that Gus is in fact even special among the hybrids as he was the very first one.
His father, determined to protect him from the world brought Gusto a cabin in the woodswhere he created a home for them and raised Gus. But when their location is compromised, Gus' father falls victim to the Sick and Gus is left alone to fend for himself. When he ventures off the property he befriends a man named Jepperd who agrees to help Gus find his mother (although begrudgingly at first).

The first season does a more than adequate job setting up the second season, with Gus being kidnapped by The Last Men after running away from Jepperd and Bear. Gus instead seeks sanctuary with the Preserve, a sanctuary for hybrid children. Of course, little does he know the Preserve has been compromised as well.
Jepperd is shot and left for dead but is rescued by Aimee, the founder of the Preserve who is intent on rescuing the children. Bear, on the other hand, ends up unknowingly making contact with Birdie, revealing that she is indeed alive. Season one leaves us with so many questions, so join us as we explore a few of the questions we hope will be answered in the upcoming season two.

How Did the Other Children Become Hybrids?
No one is sure if the Sick caused the hybrid children or if it was the hybrids being born that brought about the Sick. This leaves the world divided, with many believing the hybrids caused the Sick and will ultimately be the fall of humanity, thus the hybrid children are treated poorly and often captured and killed. Others, however, are more sympathetic toward the hybrids and seek to help and protect them. There is a clearconnection between the virus and the children, but what exactly is it?

We discover that Gus was created in a lab and in the same lab the virus of the Sick was created. This suggests that one did not cause the other perhaps, but rather they emerged together. This is supported by Birdie’s statement that the hybrids and the virus are “two sides of the same coin.” So although Gus was the first hybrid created in a lab, when the virus got out and infected the population, it seems to have had a particular side effect on pregnant women. Causing their developing fetus to become an animal-human hybrid.
Bear and her gang believed that hybrids were the work of mother nature, adapting to the virus and creating beings that were stronger than humans and could better coexist with nature. A survival adaptation in response to the virus, and perhaps this is true in a sense since it seems pregnant women did not become sick from the virus, and we have yet to find out what happens to them after giving birth, but the hybrid children seem to be immune to the Sick. And it is possible that further adaptation has caused the children to become increasingly more animalistic. Season two will likely bring further clarification of the connection between the virus and the hybrid children.
Where Has Gus' Mother Been?
When Gus finally reaches Colorado, the last known whereabouts of his mother, he discovers the truth of his existence and parentage (or lack thereof). As it turns out, Gus was created by accident in a lab, and Birdie was actually the lead scientist of the project that created him. Birdie, however, rescued him from what likely would have beena lifetime of torture, experimentation, and early death. Instead, she entrusts his care and well-being to Richard, who she had met only earlier that same day.

When Bear contacts her, Birdie’s status and location are revealed in the final episode of season one. She is indeed alive, and it seems that she is in Alaska, where the virus originated from. Originally, when she left her home, she told Judy that she was going to find Gus, and perhaps she did search for him, but it seems that her priorities and motivations have perhaps changed.
By returning to the origin site of the virus and hybrids, perhaps she is trying to further research and understand it and possibly evendevelop a cure for the virus. Although if this is the case, we wonder how she is getting her funding to pursue further research or if is she pursuing this on her own. Is she doing so willingly, or was she caught and forced by The Last Men? Or maybe she is protecting it instead, preventing others from using it to turn divide and destroy the world. Finding out what Birdie has been up to will be highly anticipated for season two.
