Netflix has revealed a new trailer for Fast & Furious: Spy Racers. This is set to be the first ever small screen expansion of the popular franchise. Vin Diesel won’t be reprising his role as Dominic Toretto in the show, but he does serve as an executive producer. Instead, the DreamWorks series will center on the high-octane adventures of Dom’s cousin, Tony Toretto. So they’re keeping it in the #FastFamily for this one.
As we can see in the trailer, this is definitely aimed at younger audience members, as it cuts down on the overly intense, at times violent action, in favor of slightly toned-down adventure. We see Tony has hopes ofbecoming a great street racer. Tony and his crew of friends are recruited by the government to help take down an organization known as SH1FT3R. This leads to big, over-the-top action, lots of racing and quippy jokes. Even when taking the kid’s show tone into account, this looks to be very much on-brand for the franchise.
This is part of a larger partnership betweenNetflixand Universal. The streaming service plays host to several shows based on Universal and DreamWorks properties, such asThe Boss BabyandTrolls. They’re also working on a series set within theJurassic Worldfranchise,Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, which is set to debut next year. The partnership gives Netflix some much-needed, branded content and gives Universal a way to further expand some of its biggest franchises.
Fast & Furious: Spy Racerscenters on teenagerTony Torettowho is looking to follow in the footsteps of his cousin Dom. His street racer dreams come true, in a roundabout way, when he and his friends are recruited by a government agency to infiltrate SH1FT3R, an elite racing league that serves as a front for a nefarious crime organization that has its sights set on world domination. Franchise writer Chris Morgan also serves as an executive producer on the show, alongside Vin Diesel, which should help make it feel authentic.
The cast includes Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf) as Tony Toretto, Camille Ramsey (American Vandal) as Layla Gray, Luke Youngblood (Harry Potter) as Frostee Benson, Charlet Chung (Overwatch) as Echo, Jorge Diaz (Jane the Virgin) as Cisco Renaldo, Renee Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton) as Ms. Nowhere and Manish Dayal (The Resident) as Shashi Dhar. Vin Diesel’s daughter, Similce Diesel, also stars as Frostee’s younger sister Sissy.
To date, theFast & Furious franchisehas spawned eight movies in the main series, as well as this year’s spin-offHobbs & Shaw. The movies have grossed a combined $5.8 billion at the global box office, with Fast & Furious 9 set to hit theaters next year.Fast & Furious: Spy Racersis set to arrive on December 26 via theNetflix streaming service.
