For years, fans have argued whether there is any real difference betweenThe New MutantsandX-Men. On the surface, it’s the fact thatThe New Mutantsare younger and in a class of their own. This summer’sApocalypseis actually introducing several iconicX-MenasNew Mutants, incoming students atCharles Xavier’s school for the gifted. We’ll get to see Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm andNightcrawlerin their freshman year. And we met another New Mutant inDeadpool, withNegasonic Teenage Warheadconfirmed to be wearing the official New Mutant uniform. But will we see any of these characters in the upcoming New Mutants movie? And if so, how will that be different from any other X-Men movie we’ve seen before?
Set in the 80s, X-Men: Apocalypse is said to bring the trilogy that started withX-Men: First Classand continued on withX-Men: Days of Future Pastto a close. But we’ve heard rumblings that the new young cast, which includesSophie Turner,Alexandra Shipp,Tye SheridanandKodi Smit-McPhee, will be back in a future movie. It is possible that they could headlineThe New Mutants. There are also rumors that another X-Men movie is in the works, to be directed byBryan Singerin 2017. If these younger actors star in their own movie, withThe New Mutantshappening simultaneously, and all the characters are roughly the same age, we truly have to wonder: What will be the difference between the two titles?
X-Men producer Simon Kinberg has an answer. Sort of. Speaking withIGN, he reveals thatThe New Mutantsis progressing as a movie. It won’t be as vastly different and radical asDeadpool. But it won’t be a straight up X-Men movie either. It will be much more along the lines of something likeThe Maze RunnerorDivergent. He states.
“Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants…It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it….That’s the fun for me, working in the X-Men universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And New Mutants has more of a YA [Young Adult] vibe to it.”
Whatever that means, asX-Men: First Class,X-Men: Days of Future Pastand X-Men: Apocalypse all pretty much fall in line with what a YA movie is.Josh Boone, best known forThe Fault in Our Stars, is directingThe New Mutants. The movie may feature X-Men we haven’t ever seen in a movie before, and some will be quite obscure, even for true fans of the Marvel comic. Simon Kinberg teases.
“There’s a long, long list of names, and I’ll tell you some of the names on that list I don’t even know. That’s how deep it goes.”
The producer does confirm that there will be ‘some familiar faces’ in the movie, which hints that we’ll probably at least see Negasonic Teenage Warhead again, and possibly some of the New Mutants introduced in X-Men: Apocalypse.Deadpoolmight also make a cameo, since his first solo adventure helps establish the New Mutant universe withBrianna Hildebrand’s character.
Also appearing in the Marvel Comic Book upon whichThe New Mutantsis based are Professor X, Magneto and Kitty Pryde, all characters already fully established in Fox’s version of the MCU. Other New Mutants that have already appeared on the big screen include Blink, Warpath and Sunspot. Who knows if they will return in this YA superhero adventure. The title was created in 1982 by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod. Some of the fan favorites we haven’t ever seen in live-action include Cannonball, Cypher, Magik, Wolfsbane, and Dani Moonstar. Personally, we’re holding out for the first ever appearance by Warlock. And is it too much of a long shot to ask for a cameo from Long Shot? As long as he has his 80s mullet in tact.
