It was later confirmed that the movie would be set in the 1990s, likely following the precedent set by theX-Menprequel trilogy that concluded this summer with the 1980s-setX-Men: Apocalypse. Today we have word that the project has brought on the writing team ofScott NeustadterandMichael H. Weber.
The Hollywood Reporterhas the news, which reunites the writers with directorJosh Boone, who they worked with on the 2014young adulthit movieThe Fault In Our Stars. The new writers coming aboard actually makes perfect sense, since producerSimon Kinbergrevealed in May thatNew Mutantshas “more of a YA vibe to it.” Along withThe Fault In Our Stars, this duo also wrote the scripts for hits such as500 Days of Summer,The Spectacular Nowand last year’sPaper Towns.
Josh Boonealso revealed theNew Mutants characterson Instagram back in May, confirming that Magik,Wolfsbane, Dani Moonstar, Cannonball, Sunspot and Warlock will be part of this story. There had previously been rumors thatGame of ThronesstarMaisie Williamswas being eyed to play Wolfsbane, a.k.a. Rahne Sinclair, withThe WitchstarAnya Taylor-Joyreportedly coming aboard to play Magik, a.k.a. Illya Rasputin, the younger sister of Colossus. There has also been talk thatX-Men: ApocalypsestarAlexandra Shippwill return as Storm, withSophie Turner(Jean Grey),Tye Sheridan(Cyclops) andKodi Smit-McPhee(Nightcrawler) also being eyed to return.
There has also been talk thatDeadpoolstarBrianna Hildebrandwill reprise her role asNegasonic Teeage WarheadinNew Mutants, since she’s seen wearing aNew Mutantsuniform from the comics towards the end of the movie. Her involvement has yet to be confirmed, but with a new draft of the script being worked on by these writers, it’s certainly possible that she could be part of the story. 20th Century Fox has yet to set a release date forThe New Mutantsyet.

The writing duo also wroteThe MasterpieceforJames Franco, who directs and stars asThe RoomdirectorTommy Wiseauin this movie that goes behind-the-scenes of this cult classic. They also wrote the script for the upcomingLet It Snow, which is based on a short story byThe Fault In Our StarsandPaper TownsauthorJohn Green.
