Nicolas Cageis finally getting his chance to play Superman after all of these years. The Oscar-winning actor, who has mostly been playing wacky characters in direct-to-video and indie projects in recent years, will voice the Man of Steel in the upcomingTeen Titans Go! to the Movies. This comes more than twenty years after he was originally supposed to play the iconic hero in Tim Burton’s fabledSuperman Lives, which was in development during the 90s but never actually got made. Now, Cage gets his chance inTeen Titans Go! to the Movies.

Warner Bros. is releasingTeen Titans GO! to the Moviestheatrically this summer on July 27. So, even though it’s not quite as big of a deal as playingSupermanin live-action, Nicolas Cage is getting the chance to play him on the big screen. Casual fans may not appreciate it beyond the fact that it’s a fun, weird choicefor Superman, but for hardcore DC fans who have been curious aboutSuperman Livesfor years, this is pretty cool. Here’s what executive producer Sam Register had to say about the movie.

Nicolas Cage Superman Teen Titans Go to the Movies

“Every superhero in the DC Universe has an impact on the fans, so we felt a great responsibility to find a voice for each character that would not only suit the role, but the playful tone of the Titans, and we’re thrilled with our cameo cast.”

Much has been made of Nicolas Cage’s would-have-been turn as Superman. Kevin Smith was hired at one point to take a pass at the screenplay, having to squeeze in some rather bizarre requests from producer Jon Peters. Because Tim Burton directedBatmanandBatman Returns, he was chosen to direct what is most commonly known asSuperman Lives. After literally years of development, the movie was scrapped just ahead of production. The whole mess was chronicled in the 2015 documentaryThe Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?

InTeen Titans GO! to the Movies, Robin is determined toget the young team their own movie, since virtually every superhero has one these days. He wants to be seen as a star instead of a sidekick. In order to do so, they’ll try and get the hottest Hollywood film director, voiced by Kristen Bell, to notice them. With a few madcap ideas and a song in their heart, the Teen Titans head to Hollywood to try and pull off their dream. But the group is radically misdirected by a super villain and his maniacal plan to take over the Earth.

In addition to Nicolas Cage, it’s been announced that singer Halsey will voice Wonder Woman in the movie, with rapper Lil Yachty voicing Green Lantern. Will Arnett, who voiced Batman inThe LEGO Batman Movie, is also on board the cast, alongside all of the core voice actors from theTeen Titans GO!TV series.
