The Queen’s Corgiis supposed to be an animated movie for kids about the Queen of England’s fictional favorite dog. Instead, Donald Trump and his fictional dog take over and quickly make the movie highly inappropriate for children. Belgian company nWave Pictures is responsible for the PG-rated comedy, which hit theaters on July 5th and director Ben Stassen claims that the movie is completely fine for children. With that being said, there is a pretty tasteless joke which references President Trump’s sexual assault allegations.
InThe Queen’s Corgi,President Donald Trumpand First Lady Melania arrive at Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen and look for a suitable companion for their own corgi, Mitzi. Right off the bat, there is a joke about the First Lady, but things take an even darker tone when the animated kids movie makes a reference to Trump’s infamous Access Hollywood tape from 2005. In the movie, Mitzi is able to pick the dog she wants to mate with, which is weird in itself, and Trump says, “Alright Mitzi, Grab some puppy.” This is an obvious reference to the President’s quote: “When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab them by the p****.”
The weirdness continues as Mitzi calls the Queen’s dog, Rex, “stud muffin” and says to “take” her. Rex later bites Donald Trump in the crotch to escape Mitzi’s grasp and he finds himself on the streets.Trumpis portrayed in less-than-flattering scenes throughout as he acts like a bumbling fool, taking selfies with a gold-plated cellphone and grabbing the Queen while yelling, ‘Cheese steak’. Director Ben Stassen had this to say about the scene.
“We tested the scene (in storyboard version) with a few American kids (no scientific sampling, but enough to get an idea). Not a single kid understood the reference toTrump’s sexist remark. All the adults did… I don’t think it is a bad thing to have scenes in a family film that can be read on two different levels by the children and their parents. The subtle reaction of the Queen’s character in the film to that line is the one I was expecting from parents.”
The Queen’s Corgidoesn’t stop there though. Later, while Rex is in the pound, there’s a drug joke, as a dog mistakes a white shoelace for a line of cocaine. One review of the movie says it is “deeply unpleasant, and in no way suitable for children.” Another review called out the animated kids movie for “normalizing sexual assault” and says, “thetasteless humoris not worth the awkward questions afterwards.”
Rotten Tomatoes currently hasThe Queen’s Corgiwith a 0% Fresh Rating from 13 reviews. As of this writing, there are no audience scores and the consensus seems to be the same across the board amongst critics. It doesn’t look like there’s going to be a bright future for the animated kids movie.
