During a presentation at the Television Critics Association, Paramount+ announced that two newSouth Parkspecials will be coming to the streaming service in 2022. These specials are a part of the recent $900 million deal thatSouth Parkcreators Matt Stone and Trey Parker made with Paramount+.
The massive deal stated thatSouth Parkwas set to expand the universe onto the platform with an expected 14 movies and6 additional seasonsthat would air on Comedy Central. The first two specials,South Park: Post COVIDandSouth Park: Post COVID: The Return of COVID, dropped in 2021. The specials are a two-part story that follows the kids in the future where they are now adults and still dealing with the fallout of the pandemic.
According toCollider, Paramount+ was asked about whether these specials would continue to be released at the end of the year and if they would keep the two-part format. A Paramount+ executive said that there are no rules with release windows and confirmed that two were coming sometime this year. As they stated, theSouth Parkspecial releases are “not necessarily always at the end of the year and not necessarily two-part events. We’re keeping those options, and like we said we’re incredibly flexible in terms of bringing those stories to Paramount+, but there will be two this year.”
South Park is Still Incredibly Popular After 25 Years
South Parkbegan in 1997 and is still going strong. It’s been the face of Comedy Central for 25 years and is beginning its 24th season on Feb. 2. Since the last season, there have been two Comedy Central specials,The Pandemic Specialand theSouth ParQ Vaccination Special. WhileSouth Parkis constantly involved insome type of controversydue to its dark and satirical sense of humor, the series has won five Primetime Emmy Awards and a Peabody award.
Outside of TV,South Parkwent to theaters in 1999 withSouth Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. There are also two video games in the series, includingSouth Park: The Stick of TruthandSouth Park: The Fractured But Whole. There is even a newSouth Parkgame in the works from Question Games.
The duo of stone and Parker have had success on other projects, including movies likeTeam America: World Police,BASEketball, andCannibal! The Musical. In addition, they are the creative minds behindThe Book of Mormon, one of the most successful and beloved Broadway musicals ever.
The 24th season ofSouth Parkbegins today. However, you can stream new and old episodes on both Paramount+ and HBO Max.
