Lara Croft will next be raiding Prime Video. After previous reports that the franchise would again be rebooted after the 2018 film starring Alicia Vikander, it’s been revealed thatTomb Raiderwill next be adapted as a TV series for Prime Video. PerTHR, the early stages of production are now beginning withPhoebe Waller-Bridgeset to write the series. The project comes as a part of her overall deal with Amazon with Waller-Bridge also on board to executive produce alongside Ryan Andolina and Amanda Greenblatt.

Waller-Bridge, who similarly plays an adventurer in the upcoming movieIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, does not plan to star as Lara Croft in the series, sticking with a behind-the-scenes role. Casting has not yet begun and it’s not clear at this time who will be taking on that iconic role. It would mark the fourth live-action project for Lara, as the character was previously played by Angelina Jolie in a pair of films in 2001 and 2003 before the Vikander-led reboot.

More recently, it was announced in 2021 that an anime series based onTomb Raideris also in development at Netflix from Legendary Entertainment. Hayley Atwell provides the voice of Lara Croft in that series, which is set in the same continuity of the reboot video game trilogy.

After theTomb Raiderreboot was released in 2018, there had been tentative plans to bring back Vikander for a sequel. At one point, Misha Green was brought on board to write the script, and Vikander had been expressing her desire to return in another movie. However, issues behind the scenes led to the sequel getting scrapped, as it was reported in July of last year that MGM had waited too long to greenlight the project. Their rights to the franchise had expired by that point, puttingTomb Raiderback up for other interested bidders to acquire to take their own stab at adapting the video game. It wasn’t really clear what would happen toTomb Raidersince then before getting to this new plan to make a TV show with Waller-Bridge.

The originalTomb Raidervideo game was released in 1996, following adventurer Lara Croft as she explored her way through treacherous tombs. In part due to the strong protagonist, the game was an instant hit, spawning a growing franchise that continues to thrive to this day. Chances are, there will be a lot of interest in the Amazon series once that show makes its way onto Prime Video.
