It has long been confirmed that 20th Century Fox’sWolverine 3will beHugh Jackman’s last time playing Wolverine, after a successful 16-year stretch that started with 2000’sX-Men. Very little is known about the plot ofWolverine 3, but one of the most consistent rumors is that the story will be at least partially adapted from the iconic comic book dubbed Old Man Logan, where Logan loses his mutant abilities and finally starts to age. Production got under way earlier this month, and while we still don’t have any confirmation regarding the Old Man Logan story line, new photos of the actor seem to hint that may be the case.

The Daily MailspottedHugh Jackmanin New York City over the weekend, doing some shopping with his wifeDeborra-Lee Furness. The actor is seen sporting a “salt-and-pepper” beard with noticeable patches of gray, which some may think is a hint thatWolverine 3could be partially based on theOld Man Loganstory line. The actor also recently shared a photo of himself on Instagram, where he’s reading a book entitled The Gene, which also shows off his facial hair.

Written byMark Millarwith art fromSteve McNiven, the Old Man Logan arc is infamous for its extreme action. The Marvel Comics saga was published in June 2008 and ran through September 2009, spread across the pages of Wolverine #66 through #72, along with Wolverine Giant-Size Old Man Logan. The plot follows an aging Logan in a distant post-apocalyptic future. Magneto, Dr. Doom, and the Red Skull have divided the dystopian United States amongst themselves after the X-Men team comes to a mysterious end. With a wife and two children, Logan has abandoned his Wolverine persona, and refuses to ever extract his claws again.

Given thatWolverine 3will be the actor’s final portrayal of Logan, many believe that the Old Man Logan story is a perfect fit for his franchise finale. The comic book isincredibly violent, and it was recently confirmed that the movie will be R-rated, with 20th Century Fox already setting a July 17, 2025 release date.James Mangoldis directing from a script byDavid James Kelley. ProducerSimon Kinbergrecently confirmed the movie will be set in the future, which could be another hint that they’re tackling the Old Man Logan story.

GrantandEriq La Sallehave recently joined the cast, and there have been rumors that the sequel is casting for theX-23role, a mutant clone of Wolverine in the comics.
