C’mon son! The secondPsychmovie, now calledPsych 2: Lassie Come Home, has been pushed back, forcing Psych-os to wait until at least spring 2020 to catch up with their favorite fake psychic and real detectives. The change is unavoidable because the movie is now moving from USA Network to Peacock, NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service which launches in April.
NBCUniveralis following the wave of networks gathering up their own content from other streaming platforms. Both the seriesPsychand the first filmPsych: The Moviewere first released on USA, but all 8 seasons are currently available on Amazon Prime. It’s no surprise that it will be moving to NBCU’s own service, as they have announced plans to pullThe Office,Parks and Rec,Brooklyn 99and many more from the other platforms as well. Unfortunately, that means a date change forPsych 2.
The titlePsych 2: Lassie Come Homespeaks to the plot of the new movie, which centers onSanta Barbara Police Chief Carlton Lassiterafter he has been ambushed and left for dead. While in recovery, by-the-book Lassie begins to see happenings that he can’t explain and turns to the psychic detective he trusts, and can’t stand, for help. But the title represents more than just the logline of the film. The actor behind Carlton Lassiter, Tim Omundson, suffered a stroke before the firstPsychmovie began filming. The screenplay was quickly re-written to accommodate and while recovering, Omundson managed to shoot a small cameo in the form of a FaceTime call with Detective Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson). This time around it really will be “Lassie coming home.”
The previous film picked up three years after the events of the series finale. It sawShawn and Gusoperating out of their new business under the horribly marketed name Psychphransico. By the end of the film, they defeat returning villain Allison Cowley (Mena Suvari) and a blond Zachary Levi. Gus met his romantic match and Shawn and Juliet finally tied the knot with the help of an ordained criminal.
Written by original series creator Steve Franks along with original writers Andy Berman and leading man James Roday,Psych 2: Lassie Come Homefollows Shawn (Roday) and Gus (Dulé Hill) as they return to Santa Barbara to help their beloved Lassie. Having built new lives in San Francisco, Shawn and Gus are forced to navigate personal and professional issues all while they’re unwelcome in their hometown. They must, “untangle a twisted case without the benefit of the police, their loved ones or the quality sourdough bakeries of the Bay Area. What they uncover will change the course of their relationships forever.” With a nod to Hitchcock and a tinge of seemingly supernatural elements,Psych 2: Lassie Come Homeappears like it will fall right in line with some of the more outlandish and entertaining episodes.
Just like the first one,Psych 2: Lassie Come Homewill feature some of the old favorites. Cast members Maggie Lawson, Kersten Nelson, Jimmi Simpson and Corbin Bernsen are set to appear under the direction of Franks. Like the series andPsych: The Movieboth Roday and Hill will serve as executive producers along with Chris Henzie. There is not specific release date just yet, but it’s likely to release in the spring with the Peacock. This news comes to us fromDeadline.
