Ryan Reynoldsis bringing his own (grim) twist to the holiday season with a hilarious spoof of Netflix’s hit film,Hot Frosty. In a new ad for his Aviation Gin, Reynolds voices a muscular snowman who bears a striking resemblance to himself. The commercial playfully parodies the Netflix holiday rom-com that follows a widow who brings a handsome snowman to life. WhileHot Frostyfocuses on said snowman finding love, Reynolds' ad takes a more comedic approach and sees a different outcome for its snowman. This time, the protagonist isn’t interested in romance with a chiseled snowman, but rather a bottle of gin.
Reynolds and his Maximum Effort banner have a knack for creating clever ads for his gin brand. Last year, they delivered two memorable holiday ads. ForJust Friendsgiving, Reynolds reunited with his Just Friends co-star Amy Smart; for the brand’s Christmas ad,Gingle Bells, Reynolds taps martinis to the tune of “Jingle Bells.”
Hot Frostylanded on the streamer on November 13 and debuted as the most-watched movie of the week with 16 million views (hey, ‘tis the season for holiday rom-coms!). It has maintained its popularity with viewers, and done well with critics, who have praised Dustin Milligan’s performance as the titular character. TheSchitt’s Creekalum stars oppositeMean Girls’ Lacey Chabert, who is a constant in the holiday movie universe and is known as the “Queen of Hallmark Christmas Movies”. Chabert’s Kathy is a young woman who magically brings a handsome snowman to life. Through his innocence, Hot Frosty (aka Jack) helps Kathy heal and rediscover love. Of course, the issue at the center of the plot is that Jack is a snowman,and winter can only last so long. Along with Chabert and Milligan,Hot Frostystars Lauren Holly, Joe Lo Truglio, and Craig Robinson.
Netflix Sets its Sights on Christmas
