While a vast majority of Americans were watchingSuper Bowl 50on CBS tonight, Fox had something unique up their sleeve, offering a unique bit of counter-programming during the game’s halftime festivities. TheX-Files Twitterfeed released a two and a half minute clip of the opening scene fromThe X-Files' season finale,My Struggle II, set to air on Monday, February 22. The clip features a rather shocking revelation, especially for fans ofGillian Anderson’sAgent Scully.
The clip, which was only available during the halftime show and then taken down shortly thereafter, is quite similar to the pilot episode’sopening scene,My Struggle, whereAgent Mulder(David Duchovny) revealing his personal history with extraterrestrials. The season finale clip, though features Scully giving her own history with these X-Files, where she discusses the DNA test she is given in the premiere. She revealed that the results showed “DNA anomalies that i can only classify as alien,” and the final shot of this scene shows Scully literally morphing into an alien.
Before this incredible reveal, she talks about the conspiracies that the U.S. government have been trying to hide for the past 60 years, “secrets kept from the American people by a self-interested cabal intent on a consolidation of power both at home and on a predominantly global scale.” Scully also added that the governments motives are unknown at this time, and it isn’t known when their final plans may be laid out. What’s certain is this season finale could set up some shocking events that could have fans demanding a new season.
While Fox hasn’t issued a renewal forThe X-Filesyet, series starDavid Duchovnyrevealed in May that he would be open to coming back for another season, provided it was another succinctevent series, and not a full-blown season that would span more than 20 episodes. With the reveal of Scully’s potential alien DNA, this would certainly set an intriguing stage for a new season, if Fox were to order one. It isn’t known if the network is considering another season yet or not.
Series creatorChris Carterteased last month that this new season, which is set 13 years after the originalX-Filesended, concludes with a “big cliffhanger.” He also noted that he is considering making a third movie, following 1998’sThe X-Filesand 2008’sThe X-Files: I Want to Believe. None of these plans are set in stone yet, so we’ll have to see what unfolds as the six-episode event series comes to a close.
