Sin Citycreator Frank Miller has signed a deal with Legendary Television to next adapt the franchise as a new television series. Robert Rodriguez, who co-directed theSin Citymovies with Miller, is also reportedly close to signing with Legendary as well. The pair also directed the 2014 sequel, which would make this their thirdSin Citycollaboration. Additionally, the two are expected to be executive producers with Legendary Television for this new project. Stephen L’Heureux (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) is also producing alongside Miller’s production company head Silenn Thomas.
This deal with Legendary would see theSin Cityfranchise expand much further with plenty of new content on the small screen. Reportedly, Legendary is guaranteeing a first season of the show, contingent on its placement on a network or streaming service. It seems likely that the series will share a universe with the previous movies, especially withFrank Millerand potentially Rodriguez on board, but it’s still very early in the process and those details haven’t yet been confirmed. Additionally, the Legendary deal is also calling for the production of a hard-R animated series for aSin Cityprequel, based on the original graphic novels from Miller.
In the summer of 2017, it had been reported thatDimension and The Weinstein Companywere developing a soft reboot series based onSin Citywith Miller overseeing the project. As Rodriguez was not involved, the series would have harkened back to Miller’s graphic novels, introducing new characters and storylines with no connection to the movies.The Walking Dead writer Glen Mazzarawas reportedly attached to write the series withUnderworldhelmer Len Wiseman set to direct the pilot. However, following the infamous sex scandal of producer Harvey Weinstein, the project apparently fizzled out. It remains to be seen if Legendary will share Dimension’s vision of going with a reboot.
Created by Miller, theSin Citycomics first went to print in 1991. Set in Basin City, the stories feature a variety of character with intertwining storylines and the comics are well-regarded for their unique art style. When Rodriguez came on board to direct the movie adaptation of the comic books, he insisted on bringing in Miller as a co-director with the two also penning the screenplay together. A box office hit, theSin Citymovie starred Jessica Alba, Benicio del Toro, Brittany Murphy, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, and Elijah Wood. Using a screenplay by Miller, Miller and Rodriguez also co-directed the 2014 sequelSin City: A Dame to Kill For. Miller teased a possible third installment prior to the movie’s release, but those plans were dashed byA Dame to Kill Forbombing at the box office.
At this time, it’s not clear if Rodriguez and Miller’s deals will also see them co-directing the TV series as they had with theSin Citymovies, or if they’ll merely be guiding the show as producers. Still, it’s hard not to get excited about the idea of the pair collaborating on a new project for the franchise, and better yet, a TV series will give us plenty of new content as opposed to just a third movie.
