The first clip fromDeep Blue Sea 2has arrived. It’s been nearly 20 years since the originalDeep Blue Seaarrived in theaters and, though it wasn’t necessarily an enormous hit at the time, it’s become something of a cult classic, and one that many have wanted to see a follow-up to. That wish has been granted, as the sequel is coming out in just a couple of weeks and now, you can get a new look atDeep Blue Sea 2in this sneak peek, which shows off some of the sequel’s highly-intelligent sharks in action.
This clip showcases a couple of fisherman in a rather sad looking small boat in the middle of the ocean. Unfortunately for them, for unexplained reasons, thebio-engineered sharksthat are supposed to be in a lab are out there coordinating an attack. The clip stops just shy of what looks to be some shark-on-human carnage, but we’re guessing there’s going to be blood on the water during this full scene inDeep Blue Sea 2.
InDeep Blue Sea 2, shark conservationist Dr. Misty Calhoun (Danielle Savre) is invited to consult on a new, top secret project run by pharmaceutical billionaire Carl Durant (Michael Beach). She believes the project, performed at a remote, sea-based facility, focuses onextracting shark antibodiesto help work toward cures for human diseases. However, Dr. Calhoun is shocked to learn that the company is using unpredictable bull sharks as its test subjects, and Durant has bio-engineered a shiver of highly intelligent, super-aggressive bull sharks. When science meddles with the time-tested process of nature and nurture, the outcome can be deadly.
If you’ve seen the originalDeep Blue Sea, many of the plot elements for this movie may sound rather familiar. If you’ve seen the trailer forDeep Blue Sea 2, it’s quite clear that this is actually much more of a remake, even if that’s not what the studio is calling it, than it is an actual sequel. Warner Bros. had been trying to get a sequel made for years, and at one point was going to make one withcrazy, weaponized sharks. This clearly isn’t that movie, but if they can make it just different enough from the original, perhaps it can still manage to be satisfying as a B-movie, blood-filled shark attack fest.
Darin Scott (Menace II Society) directsDeep Blue Sea 2, whicharrives on Blu-ray/DVD and digital platforms on April 17. Sorry, shark fans. Doesn’t look like this one is getting a theatrical release. On the plus side, don’t worry that they’ve pulled any punches with this one, as the sequel is rated R.
