The latest TV spot for the upcoming video game sequelSonic the Hedgehog 2offers a few glimpses of new footage and further teases the incoming battle between the titular blue hedgehog and fan-favorite villain Knuckles, the red echidna. Released by the officialSonic the Hedgehog 2 Twitter account, the footage builds on the foundation laid in 2020’sSonic the Hedgehog. This year’s follow-up will see the beloved SEGA mascot once again fighting to save the world from the evil schemes of Dr. Robotnik.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2picks up with the character after settling in Green Hills at the end of the first Sonic the Hedgehog, where he now uses his power of super speed to fight crime. Sonic has grown a little bored with his surroundings, however, and is ready for more freedom, with his friends Tom and Maddie agreeing to leave him home alone while they go on vacation. As soon as they leave, Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search of an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
Sonic Will Have a Sidekick This Time Around
Sonic the Hedgehog 2will introduce several new elements, each of them familiar to fans of the games. Alongside the inclusion of Knuckles and the Chaos Emeralds, the sequel will also see Tails added to the fray. Introduced in the 1992 video game also titledSonic the Hedgehog 2, Miles “Tails” Prower is a young, highly intelligent anthropomorphic yellow-orange fox who has two tails with which he can fly. Tails finds Sonic on Earth, and joins forces with the blue hedgehog to save the universe.
Tails will be voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who has voiced the character throughout theSonicseries since 2014.Sonic the Hedgehogactor Ben Schwartz has praised the addition of O’Shaughnessey, as well as that ofIdris Elba, who will voice Knuckles. “This is what I’ll say, we’ve got Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who was from the video game and played Tails, she plays Tails, Idris Elba’s Knuckles, they’re both awesome in it and they look awesome,” Schwartz said. “Jim Carrey is incredible in it. Incredible guest stars. Natasha Rothwell, who’s a powerhouse of a comedian, Adam Pally, who worked with [The Afterparty co-star] Sam [Richardson] and who’s worked with me before, is in it and incredibly funny in it.”
Directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, and based on the video game franchise of the same name published by SEGA,Sonic the Hedgehog 2stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, Natasha Rothwell as Rachel, Adam Pally as Wade Whipple,Jim Carreyas Dr. Robotnik, and Shemar Moore who has been cast in an undisclosed role.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on June 22, 2025, by Paramount Pictures in association with Sega Sammy Group.
