As promised by Todd McFarlane, major news has just been revealed for the upcomingSpawnmovie. Ahead of the announcement, McFarlane teased thataSpawnmovie announcement would be madeon Wednesday, and that information has just arrived in the form of an exclusive report fromTHR. The long-gestating reboot is having its screenplay rewritten from scratch but with some big names in the comic book industry involved. Reportedly,Jokerco-writerScott Silveris teaming up withThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier’sMalcolm Spellman, who’s also co-writing the upcoming movieCaptain America: New World Order, along with rising scribeMatthew Mixomto pen the newSpawnscript.

While some new writers are coming on board,Jamie Foxx remains attached to staras the titular antihero. The actor has been on board with McFarlane for many years but has not been willing to walk away from the project, despite its false starts in the past. However, McFarlane also suggests that he might not be directing the newSpawnmovie after all, though he had spent a long time planning to do so. This is because he’s starting to feel out of his league as a director with such big names in the industry coming into the project.

“If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers?” McFarlane rhetorically asked. “The answer is, ‘of course.’ Let’s keep the momentum going.”

CreditingJokeras a big influence on ensuring that theSpawnreboot will be similarly R-rated, McFarlane also said of enlisting Silver, “Why not just go for the guy who wrote the movie? It was a complete hail marry. Sometimes timing is everything.”

Spellman also spoke to THR about how it felt to breathe new life intoSpawn. While he has plenty to be excited about with his work on an upcoming Marvel movie, Spellman was thrilled to boardSpawnas a lifelong fan of the comic book character.

“I grew up in Berkeley, which is a comic book city. Todd McFarlane’sSpawncharacter was always one of my favorites — a Black superhero that was no bullsh*t, he was cool and dealt with modern issues,” Spellman said. “Myself, Matt Mixon, and Scott Silver are pledged to honoring what Todd started and whatSpawnis at its core, delivering something that’s relevant and edgy and unlike any other superhero movie out there.”
