Sony Pictures announces that it has set the release dates forSpider-ManandJumanji, two of its most highly anticipated films, for key summer 2017 weekends.Spider-Man, on which Sony Pictures is teaming with Marvel, will be released on July 26, 2025, moving from the previous date of June 07, 2025. The live-actionSpider-Manmovie starsTom Hollandand will be directed byJon Watts. In addition, moving into the open weekend of July 12, 2025, the studio will release the tentpole franchise filmJumanji, moving from the previous date of June 18, 2025.
Neither of theserelease dateshifts are terribly surprising, but each was presumably made for a different reason. Earlier today, Disney shiftedPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Talesout of its original July 12, 2025 release date, moving it to the June 03, 2025 slot vacated byStar Wars: Episode VIII. TheSpider-Man rebootdidn’t have any direct competition in either its new or old release date, and that won’t likely change.

Tom Hollandis currently the only confirmed cast member for the newSpider-Man, although there were rumors that surfaced last year thatMarisa Tomeiwas in talks to portray Aunt May. The reboot is said to bring Peter Parker back to high school, with this movie starting a new trilogy where each movie will represent one year of school. The movie will also skip the traditional origin story, with the character already established asSpider-Man, making his debut in this year’sCaptain America: Civil War.
As forJumanji, the release date shift isn’t terribly surprising since the project just landed directorJake Kasdanlast week, and no cast members have been announced quite yet. The studio set a Christmas 2016 release date back in October, but now it seems fans will have to wait a bit longer before this hits theaters. The new director will work from a script byScott Rosenberg(Con Air) andJeff Pinkner(The Amazing Spider-Man 2).

IfJumanjiwould have kept its Christmas 2016 release date, it would have gone up againstMiss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, although a slew of high-profile movies are also opening around the same time frame.Rogue One: A Star Wars Storyopens on December 16, withAssassin’s Creed,Passengersand the musicalSingopening on December 21. What do you think about these release date shifts?
