Here’s something of a bombshell: Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said it’s likely that a Venom vs.Spider-Mancrossover will happen at some point. This is, to say the least, a pretty wild thing to hear. While it’s unclear what this could mean for the future, or how this would all unfold, this could be big. That much is certain. Before diving into how this could happen, or when it could happen, let’s just dive right in with what was said. During a recent interview, Feige was asked about it and had this to say.
“I think probably it’s up to Sony. Sony has both those characters and, has Venom in their world. I don’t know what their plans are for anotherVenomor if they’re doing that. But it seems likely at some point.”
Just to recap, for those who may need a refresher or aren’t familiar with the situation.Sony still owns the rights to Spider-Manand his surrounding cast of characters. This includesVenom. However, Sony cut a deal with Marvel Studios back in 2015 that allows for Spidey to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s how Tom Holland’s version of the beloved character, who first appeared inCaptain America: Civil War, came to be.
So, as much as it may seem likeKevin Feige and Marvel Studioswould get to make this decision, they ultimately wouldn’t, since Sony still controls the characters. The inner-workings of the contracts between the two studios have never been revealed, but per Feige’s comments, it sounds like this ball would totally be in Sony’s court. And it seems highly likely this is something they would want to do.
Here’s where things get tricky. Tom Hardy’sVenomwas trashed by critics, generally speaking, but went on to become a surprisingly huge hit, grossing $855 million at the box office last year. A sequel is currently in the works. Meanwhile,Tom Holland is about to return as Peter ParkerinSpider-Man: Far From Homenext month, a movie that is firmly rooted in the MCU. While it may well be up to Sony to have Spider-Man, in some form, appear alongside Hardy’s Eddie Brock, it’s not necessarily up to them to bring any elements from the MCU over into that universe. So does this mean they would have to cast a different Spider-Man? For now, we’re left with far more questions than answers.
Venomco-writer Jeff Pinkner previously hinted at the possibility of Spider-Man appearing in the sequel, for whatever that may be worth. Here’s the thing; yes, it’s entirely possiblesomeversion of Spidey could show up in Venom 2, or another movie down the line. But manage expectations. This does not mean that Tom Hardy’sVenomwould become part of the MCU, nor does it mean for sure that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man would crossover in both universes.
