Steven Spielbergmay be approaching 70 years of age, but he is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. His latest filmThe BFGis ramping up for release and his schedule following that is very busy. Not only is he busy, but his next couple of projects will be a massive return to blockbuster filmmaking with the adaptation ofReady Player Onecoming in 2018 and of course,Indiana Jones 5set for 2019. Though we know very little about the follow up toKingdom of the Crystal Skull, we at least know one major detail.

During the course of a very in depth interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, the subject ofIndy 5naturally came up. ThoughSpielbergwas a little hesitant to give any specific details on the project, he did say that fans will love it and that he promises not to killHarrison Fordin the movie. Here is whatSpielberghad to say.

“I think this one is straight down the pike for the fans. The one thing I will tell you is I’m not killing off [Harrison Ford] at the end of it.”

It has also been said that they won’t just be usingFordto play an older version ofIndiana Jonesin order to flashback to a younger version of the character. So, that should be of some comfort to fans. If we really want to pick apartSteven Spielberg’s statement, he did say that he won’t killFordat the “end” of the film, which could imply that he could kill him elsewhere in the movie, but it is very unlikely that is whatSpielbergwas getting at.

After more than three years of speculation, which started afterDisney purchased Lucasfilm, the company finally announced that they were officially going to doIndiana Jones 5with bothHarrison Fordon board to reprise his iconic role andSteven Spielbergback on board to direct. It was later announced thatDavid Koeppwas being brought on board to pen the script for the sequel, which is perhaps less exciting as he wrote 2008’sKingdom of the Crystal Skull. We still don’t know ifGeorge Lucaswill be involved in some capacity.

Though many fans weren’t happy withKingdom of the Crystal Skull, it was by most accounts a success. The film was received reasonably well by critics, at least at the time, and went on to gross $786 million at the box office worldwide.Spielberghas directed all four previous entries in theIndiana Jones franchiseand isn’t likely to return to the franchise just to disappoint fans again.Indiana Jones 5is currently set for a July 08, 2025 release date.
