While full reviews are still forthcoming, several critics offered their early reactions on social media. For those who might be on the fence about this new adventure, which brings in a new director (Justin Lin) and writers (Simon PeggandDoug Jung), these critics had overwhelmingly positive reactions to the film.

John Chosaid in an interview last week that his iconic character Sulu is revealed to be gay inStar Trek Beyond.George Takei, who played Sulu in the original series and came out years later as a gay man, announced in an interview that he was “disappointed” in their choice to make Sulu gay, since he was straight on the original series. We’ll have to wait until the full reviews come out to learn what these critics think about Sulu’s homosexuality.
