While credit cookies, otherwise known as post credit scenes, have been around forever, Marvel has really made them their own. Ever superhero adventure released under Disney has had some sort of teaser or sneak peek at an upcoming Marvel movie attached to end credits. Sometimes even two. Sometimes they’re important to the ongoing story, as we saw withAnt-Man’s Winter Solider teaser. Or their just funny gags, like Howard the Duck at the end ofGuardians of the Galaxy. Now, if a rumor pans out, it sounds likeDisney and Lucasfilmwill be utilizing the same tactic with their upcomingStar Wars movies, including thenew trilogyand spinoffs.
Trusted sources have contacted SchmoesKnow, letting them know that fans should not start exiting the theater once theStar Wars: The Force Awakensend theme blasts out those oh-so familiar John Williams notes that we all love to hum so much. Everyone needs to stay firmly in their seats. Because onDecember 18th, we’re going to get a closer look at the first legacy movie,Rogue One: A Star Wars Storyin the form of a post credit scene. It will be a short clip. Of which it’s contents have not been revealed.
Details are scarce at the moment, and SchmoesKnow warn that this could all be a sham. Especially considering that we’re supposed to get theRogue One: A Star Wars Storytrailer attached to the first installment of the new trilogy. Will LucasFilm and Disney really oversaturate the premiere public screenings ofThe Force Awakenswith a double dose of their spinoff? Some fans think this news stinks!
Why? Mainly because it breaks tradition. None of the previous 6 films in the Star Wars Cinematic Universe have ever had a post credit scene. So why start now? It’s believed that Disney simply wants to keep following the very popular trend. Everyone knows to stay seated, and younger audiences aren’t too concerned with the way things have played out in the past. And while there are plenty of older fans who will gladly give away all their money seeing the sequel multiple times in theaters, it’s a young person’s market. The studio wants to continue catering to that. They are, after all, building the fandom of the future. So why not cater to their wants and needs? Also, we saw what happened when there was noAvengers: Age of Ultronend credit cookie. People stuck around. And they were pissed. Not everyone reads the Internet, and even though directorJoss Whedongave fair warning that it wasn’t there, audiences still stuck around hoping to see just a little bit more of Tony Stark and his pals.
It’s believed that having a post-credit scene tagged to the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens makes good sense on a business level. A lot of kids aren’t familiar withStar Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. WithRogue One: A Star Wars Storytaking place in the timeline before that movie, this introduces everyone to a different time and place in the galaxy. Though,Star Wars Rebels, an animated series that airs on Disney XD, is also set between the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy.
