DirectorJ.J. Abramsand his team have had a lot of fun slowly dolling out the names of each new character inStar Wars: The Force Awakens, some of which, includingJohn Boyega’s Finn andDaisy Ridley’s Rey, haven’t even been fully revealed yet. But the humans,aliensand ball droids in this latest sequel aren’t the only mysteries to be cracked. Eachvehicleand domicile seen on screen seems to be getting a unique new name, too. We learned thatDomhnall Gleeson’s General Hux resides on a space station known as the Starkiller Base, a direct nod to Luke Skywalker’s original last name in the first draft ofGeorge Lucas’sStar Wars screenplay. Now, we get to learn the name of the foreboding new Star Destroyer.
In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, thirty years have passed since the events seen inStar Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. And technology has advanced in the galaxy since then, despite both the Rebel Alliance and the Empire suffering great set backs. As the Empire slowly morphed into the First Order, so have their modes of transportation. Though they haven’t gone too far off the beaten path. When we saw the new Star Destroyer in the trailer, we still knew it, and recognized that it was a Star Destroyer.

This massive tool of theFirst Orderis intimidating and scary. Yet, that moniker is also a little cheesy. The perfect pulp name to go along with Starkiller base. Just imagine if you met the man or woman who owned a boat named The Finalizer. You would not want to go partying on the open seas alone, with them (or perhaps you would). The moment you see The Finalizer drifting past stars, heading your way, it can mean nothing but trouble.
While the general look of the Star Destroyer is instantly recognizable, there are some changes. This ship has a distinct bridge, with the command center sunk more into the form of the craft. It more closely resembles the super Star Destroyer. Over the course of the first three movies, we learned that there were a number of different Star Destroyer classes and designs. We’ll surely learn more about the Star Destroyers whenStar Wars: Ships of the Galaxyhits bookstores and online retailers next weekend, September 4. It is part of the gigantic Force Friday launch that will usher in a tidal wave of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Are you even ready?
