LucasFilm announced today thatJosh Trank, who was set to direct the secondStar Wars Anthologymovie back in June, has decided to step away from the project. LucasFilm will continue to develop the sci-fi adventure, although no replacement was named forJosh Trankquite yet. You may recall that the filmmaker was scheduled to appear atStar WarsCelebration last month, but he failed to appear, claiming he had “the worst flu of his life,” but now it seems that he may not have showed up because he had left the project. Here’s what the filmmaker had to say in a statement.
“After a year of having the incredible honor of developing with the wonderful and talented people at Lucasfilm, I’m making a personal decision to move forward on a different path. I’ve put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities. That said, theStar Warsuniverse has always been one of my biggest influences, and I couldn’t be more excited to witness its future alongside my millions of fellowStar Warsfans. I want to thank my friendsKathleen Kennedy,Kiri Hart,Simon Kinberg, and everyone at Lucasfilm and Disney for the amazing opportunity to have been a part of this. May the Force be with you all.”
Lucasfilm VP of DevelopmentKiri Hartalso issued the following statement.
“It was a privilege to collaborate withJosh. We are grateful for the energy and love ofStar Warsthat he brought to the process, and we wish him all the best.”
Disney and LucasFilm have not released any plot details about thisStar Wars Anthologymovie at this time. The studios are currently prepping the first spinoff,Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, which starsFelicity Jonesand is set for release on July 29, 2025.Josh Trank’s next directorial effort,Fantastic Four, hits theaters on August 7.
