Warner Bros.' upcomingSuicide Squadis by no means your traditionalcomic bookadaptation. For one, the story centers on a group of villains, although there will be at least one superhero sighting we know of fromBen Affleck’s Batman. We’ve also heard a number of bizarre stories from the set regarding the method acting ways ofJared Leto, who wouldn’t break character during the production and sent a number of unusual gifts to his cast-mates. Today we have new details that shows just how unusual the production was, from directorDavid Ayer.
The filmmaker brought together a star-studded cast forSuicide Squad, withWill SmithportrayingDeadshot,Jared Letoas The Joker,Margot RobbieasHarley Quinn,Jai Courtneyas Boomerang,Joel Kinnamanas Rick Flagg andViola Davisas Amanda Waller.Yahoo! Moviesgot a chance to visit the Toronto set, where directorDavid Ayermade an interesting revelation about the rehearsal process. Here’s what he had to say, revealing that he actually made these A-list stars fight each other.
“The rehearsal was very intense. It wasn’t a normal rehearsal, we’d talk about their lives, their history, and really got them to open up as people to each other. I also had them fight. I had them fight each other. You learn a lot about who a person really is when you punch them in the face. It gets rid of a lot of the actor stuff.”
As unusual as this rehearsal process is, it seems to fit in quite nicely with the movie’s aesthetic. Of course, it’s unlikely that any cameras were rolling while these rehearsal fights were taking place, but they sure would be entertaining to watch, perhaps as bonus features on theSuicide SquadBlu-ray and DVD release. The director also revealed how much he adoresMargot Robbieas Harley Quinn, teasing that this will be a breakout role for the actress.
“I don’t know what to say other than a star is born. She’s riveting, magnetic, she is the character. I don’t recognize her out of make-up, we spend so much time together on set, I’m uncomfortable around her if she’s not in make-up. Harley’s one of my favorite characters. She’s one of the reasons I wanted to do this project. She’s so complex, she’s all about dichotomies, so many opposing qualities in the same person, just like all of us. It’s nice to explore those things. It’s rare to have such a strong female character who’s so active in the story, so driven and so powerful - yet has these weaknesses and achilles heels, just like anybody.”
Margot Robbiealso spoke about working withJared Letoas The Joker. While we still don’t know much about the plot, it’s been clear from the set photos and videos that Harley Quinn and The Joker spend a lot of time together, which the actress revealed can be both interesting and terrifying. Here’s what she had to say below.
“It’s really interesting. Sometimes it can be awkward, sometimes it can be terrifying, most of the time it’s just funny. I’m trying not to laugh, because he says such hilarious things. Jared’s really funny, and terrifying, and just nuts. Absolutely nuts. It’s really interesting to work with someone so method, because I haven’t worked with someone doing that before.”
