Quentin Tarantino says he’s “steering away” from his R-ratedStar Trekmovie. It’s no secret that the director has been quietly developing the project, which blew people’s minds earlier this year. Thinking of what Tarantino would do in outer space is hard to wrap one’s head around, though it will probably never happen now. After theOnce Upon a Time in Hollywoodpremiere, the director started talking about making his tenth and possibly final movie, but that might not be his last either.

It seemsQuentin Tarantinois reassessing his options after theOnce Upon a Time in Hollywoodrelease. He previously said his tenth movie could be his last and many were wondering if that would be the often-talked aboutStar Trekproject. As it turns out, it’s not going to be. Here’s what Tarantino had to say when asked directly about the situation.

“I think I’m steering away fromStar Trek, but I haven’t had an official conversation with those guys yet. In a strange way, it seems like this movie,Hollywood, would be my last. So, I’ve kind of taken the pressure off myself to make that last big voilà kind of statement. I mean to such a degree there was a moment when I was writing and went, ‘Should I do this now? Should I do something else? Is this the 10th one?’

No, no don’t stop the planets from aligning, what are you, Galactus? If the Earth is saying do it, do it. Not that it was an argument, but a little thought, like, ‘Well, if I’m gonna go out like Max Ophüls style, Lola Montez, this is it, and if It’s not good, then all my other work is trash, alright.’ This would have been the one. But in a weird way, it actually kind of freed me up. I mean, I have no idea what the story of the next one’s going to be. I don’t even have a clue.”

WhileQuentin Tarantino doesn’t know what his next movie will be, he seems pretty confident that it won’t be as large asOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is massive in scope. “Well, this is the climax, so I can actually see now my 10th movie probably being a little smaller,” said the director when talking aboutOnce Upon a Time. However, the director has been known to change his mind from time to time and one could easily see him announcing a huge project for his tenth movie.

When Quentin Tarantino finished writingOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood, he was not prepared to make it. So, he dove into writing a play and the five-episodeBounty Law TV series. It wasn’t until he finished writing the TV series that he felt he was ready to let his agent know that it was ready, giving the studio ample time to set the gears in motion. The director knew that making the movie and editing it was going to take quite a bit of time.

Quentin Tarantino could go out withOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood. It’s arguablyone of the best movies of the yearand even his long career. Some have even hailed it as the best movie of the year. But, it doesn’t seem like the director is ready to throw in the towel just yet. He’s just waiting to see where the universe takes him.
