The first images of Christopher Nolan’sTenethave arrived. The director has also broken his silence for the first time about his mysterious upcoming movie, which he calls the “most ambitious” project he has ever made. With theDark Knighttrilogy under his belt, along withInception,Interstellar, andDunkirk, that seems like a pretty bold statement to make, but who would know his work better than the director himself? Nolan hasn’t said much aboutTenet, but the first real look at the movie is coming this weekend, so it’s time to open up about it.

Christopher Nolanputs a lot into his movies and he likes to keep them a secret for as long as he can, even when they’re based on world history, likeDunkirk. But, This latest movie seems to be a whole new thing altogether, as we learned from abrain-twisting Tenet teaser. In a recent interview, Nolan was asked about what he could divulge about the movie. He had this to say.

“We’re jumping off from thepoint of view of an espionage film, but we’re going to a number of different places. We’re crossing a few different genres in a hopefully exciting and fresh way. [Producer] Emma [Thomas] and I have put together a lot of large-scale productions, but this is certainly the biggest in terms of international reach. We shot in seven countries, all over the place, with a massive cast and huge set pieces. There’s no question, it’s the most ambitious film we’ve made.”

Christopher Nolan also revealed that John David Washington is “very much the hero” as he leads theTenet cast. “He’s a massively talented actor and physically gifted,” Nolan says about the actor. Washington recently starred in Spike Lee’sBlacKkKlansmanand used to play professional football. Nolan went on to say, “He’s an athlete and pretty hard for anybody to keep up with, including the different vehicles we shot him from - cars and helicopters. [Laughs] This guy moves.”

Speaking of vehicles, John David Washington found it hard to keep his cool while shooting some scenes involving a boat. It seems his overall talent is something that doesn’t come as naturally as Christopher Nolan thought. Washington says, “I was terrified, but when Christopher Nolan yelled ‘Action!’ I had to throw all that away and make it look cool.” Washington then went on to say what made him so uncomfortable. “Because it’s a boat, man! I don’t know how to drive a boat! But I had to act like I did.”

John David Washington is indeed an actor now, but even he gets thrown off sometimes. Though Washington and Nolan didn’t reveal too much aboutTenet, some more information will be revealed this weekend whenThe Rise of SkywalkerIMAX screenings feature the prologue for the movie. It is unclear if and when this footage will hit the internet, but it will be in IMAX theaters starting tomorrow night. You can check out the first images forTenetbelow, thanks toEntertainment Weekly.
