In a previous interview,Robert Pattinsonrevealed that he did screen tests for his role inThe Batmanusing the costumes previously worn by George Clooney and Val Kilmer in their respective roles inBatman & RobinandBatman Forever. It seems though that despite his planning for the audition, once he was in the iconic costume, none of it seemed to matter anymore as it changed how he was able to play out the audition part. While Pattinson is getting his own super-agile version of the Batsuit inThe Batman, the previous versions were not quite so comfortable to wear.

Just as previous stars of Batman’s past have revealed, each new actor has worn the suit of a former owner of the Caped Crusader title before taking over the role. While the suit always received an update for the actual movie, it seems that with Robert Pattinson, the use of the older suits in his audition proved to be something of a hindrance rather than a help. It would seem plausible that wearing a Batman suit would make you become Batman, but all it seems to have done for Pattinson was make him sweat. He toldDen of Geek:

“I went into that audition [and] you have the whole concept of how you want to play it. [But] you put on the suit and it’s just everything goes out the window. And you can’t do anything, and you’re just pouring sweat, and it was luckily an incredibly long audition. You had time to calm down, but the combination of the adrenaline, the fear, and then being so boiling hot, it seemed like a completely impossible task.”

In The Batman, the Batsuit Will Be The Most Practical Ever Seen on the Big Screen

Ever sinceBatmanarrived in cinemas in 1989, there have been certain expectations that come with every new iteration of the character. There will be a new Batmobile, new weapons, a new voice and of course a new unique take on the Batsuit. However, while Adam West’s thin, mostly fabric suit allowed him freedom to do whatever he wanted, when Michael Keaton donned the cape and cowl for the hero’s first big screen outing, the thick plastic one-piece head and shoulder ensemble was much more restrictive, leaving Keaton, and his immediate successors having to move their whole bodies to turn and look in a different direction.

It wasn’t until Christian Bale took over the role in Chris Nolan’sDark Knight trilogythat the Batsuit underwent a bit more of a change, with the headpiece becoming a lot less clunky and allowing more movement around the neck. With Ben Affleck’s costume being a beefed up version of Bale’s it now falls to the newest Batman on the block to make another round of changes to create an even more practical and less tech-savvy Batsuit. WithThe Batmanfootage having already shown Pattinson’s younger take on the charactergetting into some very aggressive fights, he clearly has no issues moving around in the new suit. While we have been given plenty of previews, it is only two weeks until we get to see Pattinson in his full glory whenThe Batmanopens on March 4th.
