IfSupernaturalandAsh vs Evil Deadhad a horror love child, it would look a lot like Prime Video’s newest series,The Bondsman. Brimming with blood, gore, and plenty of demon lore, Kevin Bacon is perfectly cast as Hub, a bounty hunter who’s resurrected from Hell by the Devil himself. Now tasked with hunting and killing demons who’ve managed to escape eternal damnation, Hub eventually finds himself stuck between a rock and a hard place when he’s ultimately forced to confront the sins of his past. Little did he know that the act damning him to Hell would literally come back to haunt him.

Despite his best efforts, Hub’s arrogance inevitably leads him down the wrong path. Rather than make amends for his past transgressions, he does everything he can to outwit the Devil and find a loophole in his Pot O’Gold contract. Whilehe certainly achieves his goalby the end of Season 1’s finale, he quickly discovers that everyone around him will pay the price. He might be free of the Devil, but now his life and the lives of his family rest in the hands of Lilith, who’s possessing the person he loves.

How Does Lilith Escape Hell in ‘The Bondman’?

Every new demonic possession also involved a human sacrifice inside the shape of a triangle. With each demon representing a specific element, the triangles were laid out to form a pentagram.Once all five shapes were complete, Lilith was able to rise from the depths of Hell and possess Cheryl’s (Kathrine Barnes) dead body. Her resurrection was the final piece of the puzzle before the start of Armageddon, and her decision to possess Cheryl was a tactical choice in an effort to manipulate Hub. Unfortunately, it worked.

A month before the events in the series, Hub makes the terrible decision to kill Lucky (Damon Herriman). However, he confuses Lucky for Cheryl one night and shoots her instead. Rather than own up to his error and take responsibility, he buries her in his yard and allows the entire town to believe she’s missing. He’s immediately damned to Hell as a result, and the leverage Lilith needs toremain on Earth and enact Armageddonis solidified. The human sacrifices and the pentagram were the first steps.Hub’s selfish deal to free Lilith in exchange for voiding his contract with the Devil and allowing Cheryl to live was the final nail in the coffin.

While taking many liberties with its source material, ‘Murder in the First’ contains Kevin Bacon’s finest performance.

How Did Lilith End Up in Hell in the First Place?

A fallen angel from Heaven,Lilith was tricked into joining Satan’s rebellion against God by the other angels who were jealous of her singing voice. As a result, God cast her down to Hell, where she’d have no music for all eternity. Because of what happened to her, it’s believedshe’s starting Armageddon as payback. However, the Devil also has a thing for Lilith, and she’s seemingly tired of his crap and wants out. She clearly has various motivations for bringing on the End of Days.

The last time she was able to free herself from Satan, she took vengeance on every man who crossed her path. She was only stopped all those years ago when she was eventually trapped inside a special pentagram and sent back to Hell. Hub and Midge (Jolene Purdy) make the same plan that captured her the first time, but Lilith successfully appeals to Hub’s selfishness and is able to escape. Now free from Hell and on the war path, no one is safe from Lilith’s grasp, which means Hub’s actions only endangered his family and all of humanity even more.

What Does Maryanne’s Possession Mean for Humanity?

Thanks to Hub’s deal, Lilith needs a new body to possess. Cheryl might be safe and sound for now, but the fallen angel needs somewhere to go. Given how much Lilith loves music, it should have been obvious to everyonewho she would ultimately possess. Plus, she still needs to control Hub somehow, sopossessing Maryanne (Jennifer Nettles) means Hub will keep doing anything she commands him to. Incapable of seeing the bigger, more dire picture, Hub’s tunnel vision might come from a place of love, but it’s steeped in selfishness as well, which spells doom for everyone.

After possessing Maryanne, Lilith kills Lucky andsets out to enact vengeanceon the other men in town before ringing in Armageddon. She tells Hub that the Devil will never stop coming for her, which means the Devil will never stop coming for Maryanne. In the final moments before the credits roll, Lilith urges Hub to serve her so that Maryanne can live. While we don’t definitively hear Hub’s response,we can probably all assume he’s now a soldier in Lilith’s war against Satan. Here’s hoping Season 2 possesses our screens sooner rather than later.Season 1 ofThe Bondsmanis currently streaming on Prime Video.
