Marvel Phase 3 comes to a close withAvengers: Infinity Warand next year’sAvengers 4. So, many are already looking ahead to see what the studio will be developing for the future. A new rumor hints that one of thePhase 4movies will beThe Eternals. While still unconfirmed, this report claims Marvel is getting ready to make an official announcement regarding Jack Kirby’sThe Eternalscomic books. Many believe this could be the MCU’s answer toThe New Godscurrently in developing for the DCEU at Warner Bros.
There had been an earlier rumor aboutThe Eternalsmovie that recently surfaced from a different, more unreliable source, but this report comes from Bleeding Cool, who claim they have been informed about by a “very reliable source,” who claims that we should expect an official announcement, “imminently.” Marvel Studios has reportedly been meeting with writers to tackle this script, and while this should still be considered a rumor, this source is said to be “ultra-reliable in the past for this kind of thing.”
Jack Kirby createdThe New Godswhen he made the surprising move to switch fromMarvelto DC in 1970, with the first issue debuting in 1971. The series didn’t quite go as planned, with DC ultimately cancelling all of the comics inThe New Godsline, resulting in Kirby moving back to Marvel. In 1976, Kirby createdThe Eternals, which was thematically quite similar toThe New Gods, following a fictional race of humanity who were intended to be thedefenders of Earth, created by alien creatures known as Celestials. They would ultimately end upgoing to war with their destructive rivalsknown as the Deviants.
Much likeThe New Gods,The Eternalscomic book series was also canceled with unresolved plot lines, although writers Roy Thomas and Mark Gruenwald usedThe Eternalsin aThorstoryline that ended inThor#301, which sealed these plot holes. The Eternalswere then brought back in 1985 for a 12-part mini-series from writer Peter B. Gillis, with Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr. creating another mini-series in 2006. A new ongoing series from Charles and Daniel Knauf was created in August 2008, but its run would only last until March 2009.
While there is no confirmation of this rumor yet, it also remains to be seen whichEternalscomics will serve as the basis for this possible movie. As of now, theMCUhas only confirmed two movies for Phase 4.Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, which kicks off Phase 4 on July 31, 2025,arrives just two months after Phase 3 ends withAvengers 4on June 04, 2025, andGuardians of the Galaxy 3, which doesn’t have a release date at this time, but is expected to hit theaters in 2020. You can head over toBleeding Coolfor their full report, and hopefully we’ll get confirmation, or clarification, about this potential MCU movie in the very near future.
