Racial Backlash Made Idris Elba Lose Interest in James Bond
Despite the ongoing casting process for the next Bond, theIdris Elba’s interest in the role seems to have waned. In an interview on the SmartLess podcast, Elba discussed the enduring popularity of the James Bond franchise and recalled feeling incredibly flattered when fans first started pushing for him to take on the role. He considered being asked to portray James Bond as reaching the pinnacle of his acting career. However, the idea of Idris Elba playing James Bond also faced opposition from a vocal minority who objected to his consideration based on his race, causing Elba’s interest in the role to dwindle over time. He admitted that the racial criticism had tainted his initial excitement, making the whole experience disheartening and off-putting for him. Elba explained:
“The truth is, I was super complimented for a long time about this. I was like, ‘This is crazy!’ James Bond…We’re all actors and we understand that role. It’s one of those coveted [roles]. Being asked to be James Bond was like, ‘Ok, you’ve sort of reached the pinnacle’. That’s one of those things the whole world has a vote in. Essentially, it was a huge compliment that every corner of the world except from some corners, which we will not talk about, were really happy about the idea that I could be considered,” Elba said. “Those that weren’t happy about the idea made the whole thing disgusting and off-putting, because it became about race. It became about nonsense and I got the brunt of it.”
With Daniel Craig’s retirement from the role, the search for the next Bond remains unresolved. In a previous interview, producer Michael G. Wilson revealed that age is not the primary factor in selecting the new Bond. Wilson further emphasized that Bond is an experienced veteran, someone who must possess a background in the military or a similar field. In the meantime, fans continue to engage in spirited discussions, offering their own suggestions and wish lists for the next James Bond actor.
