The Last Of Ushas delivered one of the most devastating episodes so far, and despite the traumatic events that have seen game-players shocked at the series going through with the major death ofPedro Pascal’s Joel and non-game players saying they are now done with the show, it has set an incredible new record for the series on IMDb.

Any show killing off one of its lead characters is a risky movie, one that can often be polarizing when it comes to those reviewing episodes on the likes of IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. However, in a shock almost bigger than the death of Joel itself, after more than 15,000 reviews, Episode 2 of Season 2 has achieved the highest rating of the entire series so far, with a 9.5 out of 10 score.

‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Is Setting Up a Dark Twist for a Video Game Character

It’s just the beginning, but ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 is already posing questions that demand answers.

This puts it just above Episode 5 of Season 1, entitledEndure and Survive, which scored 9.4. Fans were delivered a huge shock (unless you have played the games, of course) in episode 2, with newcomer Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) killing Joel (Pascal) to avenge her father, the Firefly surgeon who was supposed to operate on Ellie (Bella Ramsey). At the same time, Jackson was attacked by a horde of infected, with Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Maria (Rutina Wesley) leading the fight, just barely stopping them from destroying the town.

‘The Last of Us’ Finally Improves on the Game

WhileThe Last of Ushas been one of the most faithful video game adaptations from the start, with a few necessary deviations, Season 2 has finally done the unthinkable and outdone the source material will the episode that has removed one of the key players from the board.

The death of Joelwas always going to happen, even though some fans believed that the series would cop out in some way when the time came. But, this time, things happened almost exactly as expected, but some reviewers believe that the series reworking is actually better than the way the original story played out. One reviewer wrote:

“This second episode of the new season of The Last of Us left me stunned, not just because of what happens story-wise, but because of how it was executed. Unlike the video game, the writing in this episode makes much more sense. The characters' decisions feel more human, more emotionally driven, and therefore, more believable. What leads up to that scene-such a controversial and pivotal moment-feels far more real and justified in the series than in the game, thanks to a much stronger narrative build-up.”

While it is yet to be seen howThe Last of Ussurvives in the wake of this episode, there seems to be very few complaints from reviewers on IMDb, especially after the much lower-rated premiere episode of the season, which only scored 7.5%. The series continues on Sunday, April 27 on HBO.
