The Maskmight be getting a gritty, female-led reboot. The character’s creator and Dark Horse Comics founder Mike Richardson is prepared to move forward with the idea and knows which actress he wants to play the part. Jim Carrey originally brought the character to the big screen back in 1994 and gained positive reviews from critics, even though the movie didn’t capture the darker elements of the comic book source material. Jamie Kennedy starred inSon of the Maskin 2005, which was a commercial failure.
It continues to be the time of the reboot and remake in Hollywood, so Mike Richardson’s idea isn’t out of leftfield at all. Plus, he wants to take the character in a grittier direction, which is also very much in style at the moment when looking at thesuccess of the Deadpool franchise. But there are risks involved too, especially when looking at the latestHellboyreboot. Richardson had this to say about a possible remake.
“I’d like to see a really good physical comedian (in the role). I have one in mind, but I’m not gonna say her name. We have to do a lot of convincing for this particular actor, but we’ll see… You never know what’s coming in the future. We have some ideas.”
The Maskcomics deal with much heavier subject matter than whatJim Carreyand Jamie Kennedy brought to the screen. It seems Mike Richardson is intent on trying to bring that element back, which is also something Todd McFarlane has been trying to do withSpawnnow for years. Whatever the case may be, Richardson has his ideas for the reboot. He explains.
“I’d like it to be another character film about a person dealing with absolute power. The whole theme ofThe Maskwas we all say what we would do if we had absolute power, just likeStanley Ipkiss. When we get absolute power, we often resort to the most petty of endeavors and it’s overcoming our human nature and using the power for good.”
With Mike Richardson’s idea of a gritty, female-led reboot ofThe Mask, it could go on to be a pretty big hit if they get the right actress involved. But who is the actress he is thinking of? Melissa McCarthy and Kate McKinnon immediately come to mind, but they were both involved in the 2016 all-female version ofGhostbusters, which was not accepted by a lot of fans for various reasons. With that being said, both actresses could probably do a killer job starring in the reboot.
As for whenMike Richardsonwants to have this all done by, that isn’t clear at the moment. It seems he will want to have the right story forThe Maskreboot in place before pitching to the mysterious actress he wants to play the part. For now, we’ll all just have to sit back and see what happens withThe Maskreboot. The interview with Richardson was originally conducted by Forbes.
