Production onThe Munstersis underway in Budapest, and the latest reveal from the set is a good look at Grandpa’s chair. In the original TV series, Grandpa Munster liked to sit in an electric chair which basically serves as his throne. A photo posted to Instagram by director Rob Zombie shows us the chair which will presumably be used by Grandpa in the upcoming reboot.
Rob Zombieknows what he’s doing. In the caption, the filmmaker writes, “It wouldn’t beThe Munsterswithout comfortable furniture. Here is a little gem our prop department whipped up.” In the comments, Grandpa actor Dan Roebuck wrote, “By the way that electric chair is more comfortable than you think it would be!”
Roebuck as Grandpa was previously unveiled in a photo of the three main cast members alongside Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily and Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman. In a recent interview withHorror Geek Life, Roebuck explained how Grandpa Munster was the role he’s been preparing his whole life for, and he detailed what he’ll be bringing to the character that’s different from the original Al Lewis version.
“I think that wherever Rob wants this character to go is where we will go,” Roebuck said. “I have a particular talent for mimicry, which is why I’ve played Jay Leno, Garry Marshall, and I’ve played any number of other people who are real who I would play as they are. Kevin Burns did the documentaryAl Lewis: Forever Grandpa, there’s a Facebook group with the same name, and Al Lewis will be forever Grandpa. There’s been several other actors who have played the character in between Al Lewis, and now me. All were good actors, but having the opportunity to do it in a feature film will be good for me because I’ll have longer to work on it. The fact is, you’re able to’t get to Grandpa without going to Al Lewis. He and I are both similar, we both have this East Coast sound, and I don’t know. SinceI’ve been preparing my whole life for this, I think I’ll do a pretty good job.”
He added, “Let me put it like this, Jeff, Sheri, and I are not playingFred Gwynne, Yvonne De Carlo, or Al Lewis. We are playing Herman, Lily, and The Count, which is an easier way for us to approach it. Al Lewis was a brilliant comedian but what was unique with Al is that he played Grandpa throughout his whole life. He would play various iterations of the character in different films and shows consistently, and that’s just where his life took him.”
It has also been revealed that Richard Brake will co-star as a mad scientist while Sylvester McCoy will play Igor. Additional casting announcements are likely to be made soon with Zombie continuing to post frequent updates on social media. Jorge Garcia and Cassandra “Elvira” Peterson have long been rumored to be a part of the movie.
The Munstersdoes not have an official release date, but if the rumors are true, it will have aday-and-date releaseby premiering both in theaters and on Peacock.
