The next chapter inThe Batmansaga,The Penguin, arrived atSan Diego Comic-Conarmed with a blistering new trailer, and a few little teasers of what fans can expect from the dark and twisted world being unwrapped by Matt Reeves. Despite the dark setting of the universe ofThe Batman, Reeves noted during the panel that there are still moments of comedy to be found thanks to Colin Farrell, who ensured that this version of Penguin is his own. The actor, appearing by videolink, mentioned that he purposely avoided watching the TV seriesGotham, so he would not end up taking ideas from the show’s version of the character, played by Robin Lord Taylor.

During the panel, Reeves also confirmed that the events ofThe Penguinwill directly lead intoThe Batman Part II, and Farrell will be once again reprising his role as Oswald “Oz” Cobb in the sequel.

Academy Award nominee Colin Farrellreprises the role of Oz Cobb inThe Penguin, which will act as a spinoff sequel to director Matt Reeves’ critically acclaimed 2022 DC outing,The Batman. Picking up just one week after the events of the Robert Pattinson-led movie,The Penguinwill explore the DC supervillain’s rise to power as he goes from lowly crook to criminal overlord in Gotham City.

Created by Lauren LeFranc, The Penguin is a crime-drama spin-off television series of 2022’s film The Batman. Set shortly after the events of The Batman, Oz Cobb, A.K.A. the Penguin, begins his rise in the underworld of Gotham City as he contends with the daughter of his late boss, Carmine Falcone, for control of the crime family’s empire.

Alongside Farrell in the lead role,The Penguinhas amassed a stellar cast that includes Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Carmine Falcone; Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, a fellow mob boss and gangster; Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, the son of Carmine Falcone; and Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar, Cobblepot’s driver. The rest of the cast includes Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, James Madio, Scott Cohen, Theo Rossi, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, David H. Holmes,and Mark Strong.

The Penguin Is Due to Debut on HBO in September

It was recently revealed thatThe Penguinwill be the “bridge”between 2022’sThe Batmanand the upcoming sequel,The Batman Part II. Lead writer and showrunner Lauren LeFranc confirmed that the series will be set just one week after the first movie and teased the importance of the series to director Matt Reeves’ Bat-Verse.

“We are the bridge between the two films. We’re going almost directly into the second film Matt has planned.”

Constantine 2 Gets Hugely Exciting Update at SDCC

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has offered an update on the development of the long-awaited DC sequel starring Keanu Reeves.

Producer Dylan Clark, meanwhile, has teased more spinoffs likeThe Penguinto come as Reeves and DC Studios look to expand the franchise.

“There’s another television exploration we’re going to do. We’re looking at this entire world as it relates to who Batman is — the antagonists around them, all the crime that has to be navigated in the city — and trying to figure out where are the areas that are best to explore.”

The Penguinis scheduled to premiere on HBO on July 25, 2025, whileThe Batman Part IIis due to land in theaters on June 18, 2025.
