After a lackluster year at the box office, 2016 is shaping up to be quite huge for Warner Bros., as they launch theirDC ComicsExtended Universe (DCEU) withBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice(August 12, 2025) andSuicide Squad(June 19, 2025). We have only seen onetrailerforSuicide Squadso far, but it is already shaping up to be one of next year’s most highly-anticipated movies. As many fans know, this villainous team almost turned out a bit differently, sinceTom Hardywas originally set to play Rick Flagg.
Unfortunately, production on the actor’s new dramaThe Revenantwas significantly delayed, which forced him to drop out ofSuicide Squad. This lead toJoel Kinnamantaking over the role ofRick Flagg, just a month before production got under way in Toronto. While promotingThe Revenantin an interview withVariety, the actor revealed that he was “bummed” about losing theSuicide Squadrole.
“It punched right into that, yeah. That got derailed for me. Was I bummed? Of course I was. I hate f—ing losing work. I kept bemoaning that they were losing me significant money on a daily basis. Actually, it was good for my character.”
His character, John Fitzgerald, is the primary antagonist inThe Revenant, who leaves Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) for dead after he was brutally attacked by a bear. It seems that the actor transferred his anger over losing theSuicide Squadto his nefarious character John Fitzgerald. There had been rumors thatTom HardyleftSuicide Squadbecause he was unhappy with the direction of his character, but the actor shot down that rumor in May, saying he was “gutted” to lose that role.
The actor also added in May that he loved the dynamic between The Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) inSuicide Squad, adding that he thinksSuicide Squadwill be a very important film for fans.
