Just before Halloween in 2013, directorMichael Doughertyrevealed during a special screening of his cult classic horror filmTrick ‘r Treat, that a sequel is finally happening. Unfortunately, we haven’t heard anything about this follow-up since then. Just a few months he announced his plans, the filmmaker moved on to co-write and directKrampus, which hits theaters December 4.IGNrecently caught up with the filmmaker to promoteKrampus, where he revealed thatTrick ‘r Treat 2will happen someday, but he doesn’t want to rush the creative process.
“It’s gonna happen. The tricky thing was, as we were announcingTrick ‘r Treat 2, I was finishing the screenplay forKrampuswith my co-writers. It was just too tempting, to doKrampus. If we didn’t do it, someone else was going to, because the character just started peaking in popularity. Lo and behold, there are multipleKrampusprojects in the works. The momentum just sort of picked us up and carried us off. Thats not to say thatTrick ‘r Treathas not been simmering in the background, but I wanna get it right, I don’t wanna rush it.”
Earlier this year, the director announced that Legendary is putting out aTrick ‘r Treatgraphic novel, debuting this October, just in time forHalloween. Much like the original movie, thegraphic novelwill tell four new stories centering on Halloween, featuring the return of Sam from the movie. When asked about the stories that will be told in the graphic novel, the filmmaker said they are all set in vastly different settings and time periods.
“We do have a comic book that’s coming out this October, which sort of acts as, I hate to use the word prequel, but it expands the universe a little bit, in that, we explore the long history of Halloween, before the first film. It’s four different stories, like the film, but one is set in ancient Ireland, one is 1950s Los Angeles, there’s one in the 1800s, in the Old West, and one that’s more contemporary, a more traditional Halloween. In those stories, we explore how Halloween was shaped and guided by Sam.”
As far asTrick ‘r Treat 2is concerned, he wouldn’t divulge any specific details, except that Sam will certainly be back, but it will be four new stories. When asked if it’s possible that survivors fromTrick ‘r Treatcould surface in the sequel, he hinted that may be possible. Here’s what he had to say, teasing that the “skeleton” of his story is intact.
“Anything is possible. The skeleton, no pun intended, of the sequel is there, and right now, it’s really four different stories, with the exception of Sam, who serves as that intertwining limb. I do think it’s important that, if you’re new to Trick r treat, you can sit down and watch it without the baggage of the first one, but that’s not to say that we won’t have some threads that tie everything together, or maybe some characters from the first might show up.”
The originalTrick ‘r Treatwas never released in theaters, despite getting rave reviews from festivals. It did go on to attain a cult following after its release onBlu-ray and DVD.
