A brand new full-length trailer forTrue Detectiveseason 3 has made its way online. HBO struck gold with the first season of the anthology crime series, which starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as the co-leads in what is generally considered to be one of the high points of modern television. But season 2 took a very big step in the wrong direction, leading many to wonder if we’d ever see more. Fear not, asTrue Detective season 3 is coming our way early next yearand, based on this new trailer, those who were concerned should feel very reassured.
The footage opens up with some quick, foreboding shots and narration fromMahershala Ali. We then dig into the meat of the actual case at hand this season, which kicks off when two kids disappear unexpectedly. Did the kids run off? Were they taken? Was this the result of some terrible parenting? It’s all on the table. Ali concludes the trailer by saying, “I want to know the whole story.” Indeed, after seeing this footage, many of those who weren’t satisfied with season 2 surely feel the same way.
Above all else, this looks and feels likeTrue Detective. Right from the start when it was announced that Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch would topline the sophomore season, something was off. In this case, we have a recent Oscar-winner who looks to be at his peak, playing the same role at three different periods in his life. Thisnew season is going to cover a lot of groundand it looks like they hitched their wagon to the right star. At least with what little we’ve seen thus far, this appears to be in line with what fans wanted last time around.
This is set to be just a small part of what will ultimately be a very big year for HBO next year. They also have the final season ofGame of Thronescoming down the pipeline, in addition to new seasons ofBarry,Ballersand other hits. But withGame of Thronesending and other shows nearing that mark, the network will need to look to the future. IfTrue Detective season 3succeeds where season 2 failed, this could definitely lead to more down the line. HBO recently announced thatTrue Detectiveseason 3 will premiere on June 06, 2025.
Creator Nic Nic Pizzolatto is very much in the driver’s seat this time around.He wrote every single episodeby his lonesome, save for episode 4, which was co-written by David Milch (Deadwood). Daniel Sackheim (The Americans,Jack Ryan) and Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room,Hold the Dark) handled directing duties. Scoot McNairy, Stephen Dorff, Carmen Ejogo, Mamie Gummer, Rhys Wakefield, Sarah Gadon, Emily Nelson, Michael Greyeyes, Brandon Flynn, Michael Graziadei, Jon Tenney and Ray Fisher also star.
