The Twilight Sagatook over theaters with the debut of the first installment,Twilight,in 2008. If you didn’t read Stephenie Meyer’svampire romance books, which the movies are based on, then the first movie was your introduction to Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, Jacob Black, and more of the classic characters. Between their love triangle, which wasn’t really a triangle becauseBella always wanted Edward, their families, and more, each movie brought something special to the industry.Twilightmainly focused on the development of Edward and Bella’s relationship and his (and his family’s) determination to protect her from other vampires. The newest member of the Cullen family in this film was Jasper Hale, played byJackson Rathbone, who recently revealed that he’d like his character to have a prequel.

During aCollider-hosted panel moderated by Maggie Lovitt, the actor talked about his time as Jasper and how he’d like a potential prequel that focused on the character’s past and his growth that didn’t get much attentionin the film series.

Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan in Twilight

“Jasper — actually has… There was a darkness in his past. He’s seen literal horror of war at 17 years old, and there’s a lot of darkness there. So what I’d love to explore is the idea of when he meets Alice, that she’s there to not only send him forward about what happened in life, but to remind him that he’s loved and that he actually is worth something.”

Rathbone’s character had a little trouble sticking to the Cullen’s “vegetarian diet.” They didn’t feast on human blood;the family choseto feed on animals. Jasper Hale could also manipulate emotions.

This ‘Twilight’ Fan Theory Answers a Question That’s Been Bugging Me Forever

I’m taking this as fact because I can’t live in confusion anymore.

Jasper’s growththroughout the film seriesis something that resonated with Rathbone, who dedicated time to working in addiction recovery programs, helping individuals get second chances.

In my personal life, I work on phones, and we get people through rehab and rehabilitate people. And when you allow someone to have a second chance, you can create a new human being. But if you don’t allow that second chance, you’re just putting it back to the ecosystem. You’re locking it down to life, and that’s banishment, and that’s inhumane, in my opinion. So I believe in second chances. I believe in third chances. I believe in redemption.

How Jackson Rathbone Described His ‘Twilight’ Character

The actor described his character as self-loathing. What he needed was love and to be reminded that things can be forgiven. There are a few things surrounding Jasper in the films. Alice Cullen foresaw that she and Jasper would fall in love, and together theyjoined the Cullen family. It took a lot for him not to attack Bella, but he used his ability to calm her when she was afraid, as she and Alice were hiding from James. InNew Moon, he voted to turn Bella into a vampire, so he wouldn’t want to attack her anymore.

During an interview withLexicon, Jackson Rathbone also described Jasper as “Forged in war, born of death, saved by love.” To prepare for the role, he had to get in touch with his anger. “To prepare, I’ve been getting in touch with my anger. I see Jasper fighting with himself a lot to live a life of newfound morality. His love for Aliceis all that keeps him from being a vampire like James.”
