An all-femaleAvengersmovie? It would definitely happen ifJoss Whedonhad his way.Whedonis one of the people that nerds all over the world have to thank for the glorious age of comic book movies we are enjoying right now. No, he wasn’t around at the very beginning as a director, but his ability to nailThe Avengers, the lynch pin that the entire Phase 1 of theMarvel Cinematic Universeis based on, was a pivotal moment not just for comic book movies but for Hollywood in general. Marvel’s grand experiment worked, andWhedonwas the guy who made it happen. But not so fast.
As we all know,Whedonhas since parted ways with the studio, at least for now. In a recent interview withThe Wrap, the director revealed that he would indeed return to direct another movie for Marvel, it would just have to be under the right circumstances. When asked if he would direct a female drivenAvengers franchise, it was a pretty easy yes.
“Yeah, of course. Although I tend more towards the Jessica Jones-ey kind of stories than the delightful Supergirl stories that my daughter wants.”
The interview took place at the first ever HeForShe media summit in Los Angeles where Whedon was being honored for his work with women’s rights. Long before his work on two of the biggest movies of all time, Whedon createdBuffy the Vampire Slayer, which featured a strong female lead long before the current push for more of those types of characters in Hollywood.Whedonhad also revealed earlier in the week that he is working on a new,original script, and he gave some more details on that as well.
“It is a story about a girl who goes through some unbelievable sh-t…It is an original screenplay that is very different from everything I’ve ever done except for that it’s exactly the same,”
KnowingWhedon, that likely means it will include some very strong female characters, a bunch of great action and a very healthy amount of humor. This is all welcomed news, as Whedon is a beloved figure in the business, even thoughAvengers: Age of Ultrondidn’t quite live up to the very lofty expectations that were placed on it. But it still managed to gross $1.4 billion worldwide. For a while after the movie was finished, Whedon seemed to be very burnt out and with some of the comments he was making, it seemed as though he was totally and completely done with Marvel. Not that these comments mean he will be returning to direct aBlack Widowmovie or anything like that, but it’s nice that he is open to the idea.
Joss Whedonstill clearly has a good relationship with Marvel though. Earlier this year he returned to write aCaptain Americacomic story in honor of the character’s 75th anniversary. He also had nice words to say about Kevin Feige in regards to getting theCaptain Marvelmovie going, saying that it was a good start and that he “fought a mighty fight” to get that film on the schedule. Though, it should be noted thatWhedonwill not be directingCaptain Marvelhimself. It is obvious that Whedon is keeping busy with his own projects and has no actual plans to return to the MCU anytime soon. But it is a nice prospect to know it isn’t totally off the table.
