WhenCaptain America: Civil Warhit theaters, practically every character who has been previously established in theMarvel Universewas accounted for, with two notable exceptions, Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth). In the months leading up toCaptain America: Civil War, it was confirmed that Hulk would return inThor: Ragnarok, where both heroes would go on a “cosmic road trip” together. With both Hulk and Thor out of the picture for Civil War, many fans have wondered which side these heroes would take in this epic battle. Now, one of Marvel’s new directors is offering an interesting theory.

Earlier this year,Taika Waititisigned on to directThor: Ragnarok, which was seen by many as an unusual choice. The filmmaker is best known for his comedies such asEagle vs. Shark,What We Do In the Shadowsand his work on the cult classic TV seriesFlight of the Conchords.Fandangorecently caught up with the filmmaker while he was promoting his latest filmHunt For the Wilderpeople, hitting theaters June 24, where he was asked if Thor would side with Team Iron Man or Team Cap inCaptain America: Civil War. Take a look at his surprising response below.

“We’ve talked a little bit about this. Personally, I feel Thor would have started his own team. He wouldn’t have liked the idea of those teams. But, even though Thor is from outer space and he lives in a palace, part of me likes to think he would side with Cap. I would side with Cap purely because I don’t trust billionaires.”

Of course, we’ll never know for sure who Thor would have teamed up with, but the exclusion of both Thor andHulkdidn’t seem to hurtCaptain America: Civil War’s performance at the box office. After just over one month in theaters, the superhero adventure has taken in $398.4 million domestic and over $1.1 billion worldwide. We’ll have to wait and see if it can surpassThe Avengers' $1.5 billion take before it closes out its box office run.

Chris HemsworthandTom Hiddlestonare returning asThorandLoki, along with a slew of new cast members.Jeff Goldlbumhas signed on as The Grandmaster, withKarl Urbanportraying Skurge and Tessa Thompson starring as Valkyrie. Production is slated to begin on July 4 in Australia, so hopefully we’ll have more story details in the near future. Stay tuned for more onThor: Ragnarok, which has been set for release on August 06, 2025.
