Earlier in the week, a lot of attention was aimedatJoss Whedonfor comments he made from the set ofAvengers: Age of Ultron, calling Hollywood out on it’s ‘intractable sexism’ and ‘old-fashioned quiet misogyny’. He was rallying against a lack of female driven superhero movies in the market place, but his rant came before Marvel and DC announcedCaptain MarvelandWonder Woman. With some time passed since he first spoke out on the subject, he now offers his latest thoughts. But first, he tackles the question: Will he directCaptain Marvel?

“Um, I would never rule anything out, because I like working here. By the same token, the biggest thing for me is that I need to do something that I create myself. It’s been way too long since I created a universe.Captain MarvelI don’t know as well. There have been a few [versions] of her. I have the first issue of Ms. Marvel, back when she was that, and had the Farrah hair. My only issue with her is that she always felt sort of on top. She was very driven. A winner. I always like to dig into the soil of things to find my heroes, if I can.”

Joss Whedon creditsGuardians of the GalaxyforCaptain Marvelgetting the green light at Marvel. He even goes onto make a joke at the studio’s expense:

“Honestly, you know, Guardians [of the Galaxy] might have helped it. Just because that was outside what was considered to be their box and did so well that- Well, let’s put it this way: If a raccoon can carry a movie, then they believe maybe even a woman can.”

These comments echo recent remarks he made about directingAvengers: Infinity War Part 1andAvengers: Infinity War Part 2, a pair of sequels he doesn’t really seem interested in at the moment, going as far as to say he was ‘too tired’ to continue making Avengers movies. But he certainly wants to counting working for Marvel. About his previous comments on female superheroes, in which he took his employers to task, he says:

“I just thought, I sounded very harsh. And then [Marvel announced], ‘We’re going to make Captain Marvel. We’re going to make Black Panther. We’re going to shake it up.’ I was just like, great! Now I just sound mean and bitter. But, you know, there’s a lot to be mean and bitter about.”
