Now thatBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justicehas hit theaters, the next DC Comics movie to debut will beSuicide Squad, arriving this summer. Much likeBatman v Superman, which made history by bringing Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) together on the big screen for the first time,Suicide Squadwill mark the first silver screen appearance for a number of villains, includingWill Smith’sDeadshot. As it turns out, the fact that this character hadn’t been seen on the big screen before is one of the main reasons he signed forSuicide Squad.

Will Smithis no stranger to comic book fare, starring in theMen in Blackfranchise which was based on an obscure comic, and he also played an incredibly unconventional superhero in the 2008 movieHancock. During an interview withComingSoon.net, the actor revealed that he helped design Deadshot forSuicide Squad. Here’s what he had to say.

“It’s a character that hasn’t really been explored in cinema. I get to design it and be a part of creating the first round of Deadshot in the history of cinema. It’s a really great opportunity to work with a reallygreat ensemble. It was perfectly cast. It’s an insane group ofsuper villainactors.”

Suicide SquadmarksWill Smith’s first time working with directorDavid Ayer, but it didn’t take long for the actor to find his second project with the filmmaker. Last month, Netflix put up $90 million to finance the crime fantasy thrillerBright, which hasWill Smithset to star andDavid Ayerset to direct from a script byMax Landis(Chronicle). When asked what makes working with the filmmaker so special, the actor had this to say.

“It’sDavid Ayer’s tonal quality. It’s how he thinks and how he moves and how he sees the world. These kinds of movies are a different breed. The huge, gigantic tentpoles that are designed to be global behemoths. I wanted to do something like that with David Ayer, who is a director that cares only about character. Every single aspect and detail of the character playing into that gigantic box for me is what makes this one really special.”

We reported last month that Warner Bros. wantsWill Smithand directorDavid Ayerto reunite forSuicide Squad 2, which the studio eyeing a 2017 start date. Those plans haven’t been confirmed yet, and the sequel may not be officially announced until afterSuicide Squadhits theaters this August. Still, if it’s a hit, we’ll most likely get an official announcement aboutSuicide Squad 2shortly after the theatrical release.
