We may finally get thatWillowsequel, it just won’t be a movie. Instead, according to Ron Howard, it’s being discussed as a TV series for Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+. We’ve been hearing buzz here and there about a possible sequel to the 1988 cult classic for a handful of years now. Yet, nothing has materialized. That may change in the relatively near future though.
Ron Howard, who directed the originalWillow, working from a story byStar Warscreator George Lucas, was recently a guest on a podcast. During the interview, the subject of a sequel to the movie came up. At that point, Howard felt comfortable disclosing that the project may very well land at Disney+. Here’s what the filmmaker had to say about it.
“There are some really serious discussions going on with Jon Kasdan, who was one of the writers of Solo, who kept hounding me about Willow the whole time we were shooting and also hounding Kathy Kennedy. We’re in discussions about developing a Willow television show for theDisney+. And I think it’d be a great way to go. In fact, George always talked about the possibility of a Willow series, and it’d be great and more intimate, and built around that character and some of the others. And Jon Kasdan has, I think, an inspired take on it and it could be really, really cool.”
Solodidn’t turn out to be the hitDisneywas hoping for. Ron Howard was hired to direct it and oversee massive reshoots once Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired. That said, Ron got along quite well with Kathleen Kennedy and the studio doesn’t seem to blame him for anything that didn’t totally pan out with theStar Warsstandalone. It did, however, seem to put the pieces in place to possibly get thisWillowTV series going.
It isn’t quite clear at the present time what this take Jon Kasdan has for aWillowseries would be. Original star Warwick Davis, as recently as Star Wars Celebration earlier this month, has expressed his desire to return to the franchise in some capacity. It also seems likely that Val Kilmer would be willing to return. He’s already revisiting one of his most iconic roles inTop Gun: Mavericknext year. So why not this as well?
