Rian Johnson has officially begun work on his upcomingStar Warstrilogy.Star Wars: The Last Jediis now available on digital HD and will be released on Blu-ray next week. That means, Johnson is truly done with his obligations for that movie and can dedicate his time toStar Wars 10. He is developing an entirely new trilogy of movies for Lucasfilm that have nothing to do with the Skywalker saga. Now, it’s been revealed that work has started on the new movies, even if the work is slow right now.
The news comes from Rian Johnson’s longtime producing partner Ram Bergman, who worked closely with the director onThe Last Jedi. While speaking on the topic briefly at the Rakuten TV Empire Awards, Bergman revealed that they’ve started work on the newStar Warstrilogy and that they hope to get “busier” soon. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“We’ve started. Slowly, slowly, but we’ve started. Hopefully soon we’re going to get busier.”
Precious few details are currently available about this newStar Warstrilogy, but we know thatRian Johnsonis going to have a lot of creative control when it comes to what shape this series of movies will ultimately take. The project came about as a result of Johnson and Lucasfilm having such a positive experience working with one another onThe Last Jedi. Johnson pitched the idea ofcreating a new trilogythat would tell an entirely new story within the confines of theStar Warsuniverse and, beyond that, it’s up to the creativity of the filmmaker to dictate where this thing can go.
This newStar Warstrilogy will be written and developed by Rian Johnson, who plans to direct at least the first installment. However, subsequent installments could be helmed by other directors. There’s also the recently announced series of new movies in development fromGame of Thronescreators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Again, there are very few details available in regards to what story those movies will tell. There’s also the long-rumoredObi-Wanmovie, but there’s been no official announcement from Lucasfilm about the project. Following the release ofSolo: A Star Wars Storythis May and J.J. Abrams’Star Wars 9next December, the specificfuture of the franchise is largely a mystery.
We previously reported that the first installment of Rian Johnson’s newStar Warstrilogy could befilming this summer in Scotland. That now seems unlikely, as it sounds like this is still in the very early stages. Not only that, butStar Wars 9is set to begin filming in July and Lucasfilm probably wouldn’t be in production on two of these movies at the exact same time with so much overlap. The good news is, they aren’t rushing Johnson and he can take the time he needs to develop the story.
